Coronavirus testing will keep a Royal Caribbean cruise ship's passengers in NJ until Monday, company says - Fox News

The Royal Caribbean cruise ship Anthem of the Seas, which has been docked in Bayonne, N.J., since Friday over coronavirus concerns, will remain there until Monday, company officials said Saturday.

That will allow enough time for all testing for the virus to be conducted and to obtain “conclusive results” before the ship moves on, a Royal Caribbean statement said.

Some 27 of the ship’s passengers had recently been in China, prompting a screening for the novel coronavirus after the ship arrived in New Jersey on Friday. Four of those passengers were subsequently sent to a hospital after at least one of them tested positive for the flu, NorthJersey.com reported Friday.

But on Saturday, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy issued a statement saying all four patients had tested negative for the novel coronavirus. Instead, three had a common version of the flu while a fourth person traveling with them showed no symptoms of illness, the governor’s statement said.

Twenty-three other patients who were cleared after screening for coronavirus were taken to nearby Newark Liberty International Airport for a flight back to China, NorthJersey.com reported.

According to Murphy, “New Jersey currently has no confirmed cases of novel coronavirus and the risk to residents remains low.”

On Friday, Royal Caribbean stopped accepting travelers from China, Hong Kong and Macau, or who had traveled through China or Hong Kong "in the past 15 days" or have had contact with someone who did, NorthJersey.com reported. The cruise line is also calling for health screenings for all guests with flu-like symptoms.

Crew member found dead

Separately, a crew member of the Anthem of the Seas -- the ship docked in Bayonne -- was found dead aboard the ship last week but officials said the death was not suspicious and was unrelated to coronavirus, New 12 New Jersey reported.

The latest figures reported by global health authorities show 12 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the U.S., with one American having died while in China.

China remains the epicenter for coronavirus, with 811 deaths and 37,918 confirmed cases on the mainland.

Europe has seen 38 infections across nine countries, including 14 in Germany, The Associated Press reported.

Denver-area couples say they're out thousands after wedding venue abruptly closes - The Denver Channel

WESTMINSTER, Colo. — At least two couples just months from their wedding day are out of thousands of dollars and a venue for their special day after Noah's Event Venue abruptly closed.

The Noah Corporation out of Utah, runs 42 venues out of 25 states, and one is in Westminster. The company filed for bankruptcy in May of 2019, but the location in Westminster continued to book events. Denver7 visited the site, and there was no sign posted that it was closing on the door or when we called to seek information.

Cassie Ali and Christina Vigil say they received an email on Friday informing them about the sudden closure.

These are the email sent to both brides to be:

I send this email to you with my deepest condolences while I struggle to find the words to say. Noah’s is closing its doors. I wanted you to know sooner than later and while a representative from Noah’s should be contacting you I wanted to reach out personally and tell you that I understand how completely devastating this is for you and your day. I had absolutely no idea this would happen and am absolutely shocked. I could never apologize enough for the devastation that this has caused you and if I had any idea this would have occurred I would never have ensured you to entrust in this company with such a special day in your life. A representative from Noah’s should be reaching out to you, and I was told to have no further contact with any of my clients and that effective immediately I no longer have a job. I felt it necessary to reach out to you even though I cannot be a contact for you to help moving forward. I am genuinely so sorry that this has happened and just wanted you to have as much notice as possible.

"We waited ten years for this day," Ali said.

She booked her wedding in 2018 and remembered dreaming of this day since she started dating her fiancé, Jeremy Rodriguez.

She said they paid $9,000 for the venue and her last payment of $1,900 was withdrawn on Thursday, just a day before she got an email the site was closing.

Christina Vigil and her fiancé Joseph Maes say they spent the last two years of their 9 ½ year relationship saving for the wedding.

"It was finally time, but it was swept out from underneath us," Maes said.

Vigil says she shelled out $6,000 for the venue and adds that a payment was withdrawn on Friday.

Maes cried as he described the anguish and pain he felt when he learned the event center was closing. He says he worked 15-20 hour shifts six days a week for the last two years to bring to life his fiancée's dream wedding.

"They should have at least had the decency to tell us like, 'hey we filed for bankruptcy,'" Vigil said.

Both brides to be were set to get married in April. Now they are scrambling to find a new wedding venue.

"It's still thousands of dollars that we don't have," Ali said.

She broke down as she said vendors have reached out to offer services at discounted rates.

"I don't want my wedding to turn into some charity case," Ali said. "We worked hard."

Taneisha Cordell, a reporter at our sister station in Cleveland, spoke Kenneth Cannon II, the bankruptcy attorney for the Noah Corporation. He said the company was on track to become a national chain but expanded to fast, which led to bankruptcy. He added that the company planned to continue operating, but bad publicity hurt projected profits.

Clients can file a claim with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court District of Utah. He warned it was unlikely anyone would be reimbursed.

Through our reporting, we also discovered the Noah Corporation, among others, is mentioned in a federal lawsuit filed by investors accusing the company of fraud.

Crew Member Dies for Unrelated Reasons on Virus-Delayed Cruise Ship: Sources - NBC New York

A crew member on a cruise ship that was delayed in New Jersey after more than two dozen of its passengers were screened for the coronavirus was found dead on the ship due to what appears to be an unrelated cause, law enforcement sources say.

More than two dozen Chinese nationals traveling aboard Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas cruise were screened for signs of the new virus after the ship returned to Bayonne in New Jersey early Friday morning. Four were taken to a hospital out of caution.

On Saturday, two law enforcement sources told NBC 4 New York a 54-year-old crew member died on the voyage. Authorities do not believe the man’s death was related to the coronavirus, but are treating it with an “abundance of caution” as they await autopsy results.

The crew member, a Filipino national, was found in an engine room last weekend, two sources said. His body was kept in a refrigerated compartment until the ship docked in New Jersey, according to the sources.

His body has been taken to Newark for what law enforcement sources described as a “rush” autopsy. It wasn’t immediately clear when the results would be released, but a law enforcement source said he had no signs of having the coronavirus.

"We can confirm that local authorities were immediately notified after a crewmember who did not report for work was found deceased. We cooperated fully with law enforcement in their investigation and have been advised the death was non-suspicious," Royal Caribbean said in a statement.

Twenty-seven Chinese nationals were screened for signs of the virus after the ship docked in Bayonne Friday morning. The virus has sickened tens of thousands in mainland China and killed more than 700.

Royal Caribbean on Saturday said the four passengers were being tested by the CDC, adding that none of them "showed any clinical signs or symptoms of coronavirus."

"One had tested positive onboard for Influenza A," the company noted.

The Royal Caribbean cruise ship left Bayonne on Jan. 27, according to the itinerary, and returned Friday morning. It was supposed to depart again on Friday, but Royal Caribbean announced shortly before noon that the trip would be delayed.

The company initially said the cruise would depart at 5 p.m. Saturday with a shortened itinerary, but on Saturday said the departure would be pushed to Monday, Feb. 10.

"We are still waiting on the conclusive results from the CDC from their office in Atlanta, GA," Royal Caribbean said in a statement Saturday. "Unfortunately, due to the volume of tests they are conducting for Coronavirus, they will need the next 24-48 hours to complete the test."

The cruise said passengers who decide they no longer want to sail will receive "a full refund."

Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis told News 4 that none of the 27 people who were screened were from Wuhan, the epicenter of the virus, or had traveled there since the outbreak was first identified.

No one in New Jersey or New York has been found to have the virus, but one patient with symptoms was awaiting test results in New York City as of Saturday. Four previous tests from Manhattan and Queens were negative.

Spectrum outage: Subscribers say service restored in Central NY - syracuse.com

Spectrum services has been been restored across Central New York after an outage Saturday, according to subscribers.

Spectrum had earlier reported service outages from Upstate New York to Maine, and a service map created by Down Detectors appears to show a decrease in outages.

The company has yet to provide any updates on restored service.

The widespread outage was announced early Saturday afternoon in a tweet. Customers lost service in Upstate New York, New Hampshire and Maine, Spectrum said. In Upstate New York, customers reported outages from Central New York to the Adirondacks.

So many people called Spectrum’s help line that the help line is no longer accepting calls.

“Fiber optic damage” has caused the outage, Spectrum said. The service provider did not say when the outage was expected to be fixed.

“We are investigating and working to resolve the problem,” Spectrum tweeted. “We apologize for any inconvenience this is causing.”

Spectrum first acknowledged service problems in Maine just before 4 p.m. Friday. In a tweet sent less than two hours later, Spectrum said the company’s fiber optic network had been damaged, leaving customers without service in New Hampshire as well as Maine. Just after 11 p.m. Friday, Spectrum tweeted the “fiber break" had been fixed.

It is not known if that outage is related to the one that hit Saturday.
