KITCHENER — The day is finally here! Ion trains will finally start boarding passengers when Waterloo Region's light rail system officially launches at noon today.
The celebration will kick off with a ceremony at Fairway station in Kitchener at 10:30 a.m.
After speeches, the first four trains will take a quick trip down the line to Mill Street station and back. Those are reserved for dignitaries and VIPs, including the three lucky "golden ride" contest winners. Nearly 8,000 entered for a chance to ride on the first Ion.
At noon, public service begins. Trains will be at the ready along the 19-kilometre line between Kitchener and Waterloo to start picking up passengers as soon as service starts.
The Waterloo Region Record will have a team of reporters and photographers covering launch day.
Also be sure to pick up a copy of today's Record for a special Ion section.
