Ticket sold in Prairies wins Friday's $65 million Lotto Max jackpot - CP24 Toronto's Breaking News

TORONTO -- Lotto Max players in the Prairies should really check their tickets, because one that was sold there is worth $65 million dollars.

A single ticket purchased in the Prairies claimed Friday night's huge jackpot.

There was no immediate word on exactly where it was sold.

There were also eight Maxmillion prizes of $1 million each up grabs, but only one of them was claimed - by a player in Ontario.

The jackpot for the next Lotto Max draw on Oct. 8 will be approximately $17 million.

Tidewater shares fall on deal to buy Prince George, B.C., refinery from Husky - Global News

Shares in Tidewater Midstream and Infrastructure Ltd. fell sharply Friday after it announced it would buy a small light oil refinery in Prince George, B.C., from Husky Energy Inc. for $215 million.

While Husky shares rose slightly, Tidewater stock fell by almost 11 per cent to as low as $1.00 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The midstream company’s core business is processing natural gas and upgrading, transporting and storing petroleum products produced in northern Alberta and B.C. It has scheduled a conference call for Monday to discuss the deal.

“We attribute the reaction to it being an unexpected acquisition for the company in a somewhat new business line,” analyst Trevor Reynolds of Acumen Capital wrote in an email, adding there is also concern about its plan to fund the purchase entirely with debt.

In announcing the deal, Tidewater said the transaction offers many “synergistic opportunities” to expand its petrochemical liquids value chain in northern B.C.

Its recently commissioned Pipestone Montney gas plant there separates and purifies a light oil called condensate, the “optimal” and current feedstock for the 12,000-barrel-per-day refinery, it noted. The refinery’s top two customers are also Pipestone customers, it added.

Shares in Husky rose after analysts rated the deal a positive step in its quest to sharpen focus on its physically linked heavy oil and refining assets in Western Canada and the United States, as well as its offshore oil and gas production off Canada’s East Coast and in the Asia-Pacific region.

Analyst Greg Pardy of RBC Dominion Securities said in a report the sale price is near the upper end of RBC’s earlier estimate of $180 million to $225 million.

Husky announced last January it would attempt to sell the refinery and its cross-Canada network of more than 500 service stations, travel centres, cardlock operations and bulk distribution facilities.

“We continue to deliver on Husky’s five-year plan … aimed at further enhancing the resiliency of the company,” said CEO Rob Peabody in a news release on Friday. The company said its review of Husky’s retail and commercial fuels business “continues to progress.”

As part of the sale Friday, Husky has agreed to buy 90 per cent of the refinery’s diesel and gasoline capacity for five years, with prices subject to review, to supply its and its partners retail gasoline stations.

The deal includes a closing adjustment for inventory, as well as a contingent payment of up to $60 million over two years.

The Prince George refinery, mainly used to supply fuel for the immediate region, is one of only two major refineries in British Columbia.

In 2017, Calgary-based fuel marketer Parkland Fuel Corp. announced it would buy the other, a 55,000-barrel-per-day facility in Burnaby, B.C., owned by Chevron Canada.

The $1.46-billion pricen tag included 129 gas stations in the Vancouver area, 37 commercial cardlock and three marine fuelling locations, as well as three terminals in B.C. and a wholesale business that includes aviation fuel sales to the Vancouver International Airport.

This is how customers will be affected during the Crown corp. strike - CBC.ca

The CEOs of seven Crown corporations say customers may experience delays if Friday's strike continues.

Around 5,000 employees from SaskTel, SaskPower, SaskEnergy, SaskWater, the Water Security Agency and two SaskTel subsidiaries are on the picket lines.

The employees went on strike after midnight Friday as contract negotiations broken down between Unifor — the union that represents the workers — and the government.

The Crown CEOs said on Friday that essential and emergency services will stay the same but services such as customer call-in lines, and other non-essential services, will be restricted.

No new SaskTel home services or activations during strike

SaskTel is closing its stores during the strike. There also won't be any new home services or transfer services activated.

Customers are still able to adjust their plans on SaskTel's website.

SaskTel will not be activating any new business services, except for wireless, during the strike as well.

Doug Bernett, president and CEO of SaskTel, said a contingency plan is in place for situations like this.

"The plan really consists of insuring that the management contingent that we have at SaskTel are sufficiently trained to be able to maintain not only essential services, but to be able to provide services to our customers with minimal disruption," he said.

SaskPower reducing phone, online chat hours

SaskPower is reducing its phone and online chat hours to 10 a.m. CST to 3 p.m.

Emergency services are still available through their outage centre and can be reached at 310-2220.

Customers are asked to use SaskPower's website, or app, for other issues like streetlight problems, tree trimming or account questions.

"The outage centre will continue to dispatch electrical emergency and power outage calls to our power line technicians around the province," said Mike Marsh, president and CEO of SaskPower.

"There may be some delays, but our intent here is to continue to keep the electric system running in the province."

SaskEnergy suspending customer service line, keeping emergency line

SaskEnergy is suspending its customer service line but its 24-hour emergency line will stay in operation.

Non-emergency work, such as installing new gas lines or attaching meters to new or business, will not be available during the strike.

Ken From, CEO and president of SaskEnergy, said natural gas will continue to flow.

He said people will continue to receive their bills but they should email SaskEnergy with any questions.

SaskWater not withdrawing any services

SaskWater will not be suspending any of its services.

Meanwhile, Saskatchewan Water Security Agency will continue to provide emergency services such as drinking water advisories.

But there could be delays in getting water and drainage permits.

None of the CEOs would comment on contract negotiations.

‘Better now than later’: PayPal quits Facebook’s Libra as Europe puts future of project in question - RT

US-based PayPal Holdings Inc. has said it’s ditching Facebook’s project to create the Libra cryptocurrency. However, the Libra Association says it is better to know who’s not fully committed to its cause.

“PayPal has made the decision to forgo further participation in the Libra Association at this time and to continue to focus on advancing our existing mission and business priorities as we strive to democratize access to financial services for underserved populations,” CNBC channel reported, quoting a statement from the payments processor.

PayPal said, however, that it would remain “supportive of Libra’s aspirations.” The move made PayPal the first member to exit the Geneva-based Libra Association, the entity managing the Facebook-led project to create a global digital currency.

Following PayPal’s announcement, the Libra Association responded coolly that it prefers to know which of the group’s members is not fully committed to its cause from the start.

The type of change that will reconfigure the financial system to be tilted towards people, not the institutions serving them, will be hard. Commitment to that mission is more important to us than anything else. We’re better off knowing about this lack of commitment now, rather than later,” the group said in a statement, as cited by Reuters.

The group said in a tweet that it will hold its first Libra Council meeting in 10 days and will be sharing updates following that, including “details of the 1,500 entities that have indicated enthusiastic interest to participate.
Meanwhile, Facebook Inc. declined to comment on PayPal’s exit. The Libra Association now has 28 members, including Uber Technologies Inc, Lyft Inc and Spotify Technologies. However, the Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week that Visa, Mastercard and several other financial partners that had signed up were “reconsidering” their participation in the Libra project due to pressure from government officials.

Facebook unveiled plans to launch its digital currency by June 2020 this past summer. However, the project faces difficulties globally due to skeptical regulators. France and Germany both stated last month that they would attempt to block Libra from operating in Europe, saying it posed risks to EU states’ sovereignty. The European Central Bank also repeatedly called for a strict oversight of Libra and is to present a report on it at the upcoming G20 meeting. US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell recently said that Libra raises “serious concerns regarding privacy, money laundering, consumer protection, financial stability.” The Fed later launched a working group to examine the new coin.

Anbang's purchase of B.C. seniors homes under renewed criticism - Vancouver Sun

Investigations into alleged neglect and abuse at facilities on Vancouver Island are causing fresh scrutiny of the $1 billion-plus sale of the chain and its properties in 2016

The ownership of B.C.’s Retirement Concepts by China’s Anbang Insurance Group is under scrutiny after one seniors home on Vancouver Island was taken over by the regional health authority and two others were put under investigation.

This week, Island Health said it is taking over a Retirement Concepts facility in Courtenay after allegations of abuse and neglect. It is also investigating similar complaints at two other facilities, in Victoria and Nanaimo.

Jennie Deneka, partner at Pacific Reach Seniors Housing Management that manages Retirement Concepts, said the problems on the Island are caused by a critical staff shortage that does not affect its homes in the Lower Mainland and the Interior.

Staffing may indeed be behind the problems, said Mike Old, coordinator of policy and planning for the Hospital Employees’ Union. But, he said, Retirement Concepts is known for paying low wages.

“We’ve been talking for a while about what impact the financial state of Anbang could have on the operations of these facilities,” he said.

The Beijing company had been a swashbuckling buyer of properties such as the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York. Anbang bought Retirement Concepts, the highest-billing provider of assisted living and services for seniors in B.C., in 2016.

In 2018, Anbang’s chairman was jailed for corruption. The company started selling US$10 billion in buildings and hotels it owns in North America and Europe, including the Bentall Centre in downtown Vancouver, to pay off debts.

The situation at the seniors facilities overseen by Island Health could be a “canary in the coal mine” for the others, said Old.

It raises questions about whether Ottawa and Victoria, which approved the Anbang purchase, did enough to assess the Chinese insurance company.

Former B.C. health minister Terry Lake, who is running for the Liberals in Kamloops—Thomson—Cariboo, said Friday that Ottawa was responsible for vetting the buyer and B.C. assessed the company’s eligibility for receiving licenses based on the operator continuing to be contracted to run the facilities in the same way for a minimum of three years.

At the time, federal Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains said Anbang’s wholly-owned, Vancouver-based subsidiary agreed to maintain levels of full-time and part-time employees, ensure Canadians played a role in the business and maintained existing residences.

However, B.C. hospital workers and others expressed their concerns in 2016 that working hours and provision of care could deteriorate under Anbang’s ownership.
