Bank of America's stock jumps after profit beats expectations, revenue surprisingly rises - MarketWatch

Shares of Bank of America Corp. BAC, +2.02% rose 1.8% in premarket trading Wednesday, after the bank reported a third-quarter profit that fell less than expected, while revenue surprisingly increased, as consumer and global banking and wealth and investment management revenue increased to offset a slight decline in global markets revenue. Net income fell to $5.78 billion, or 56 cents a share, from $7.17 billion, or 66 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Total revenue rose to $22.81 billion from $22.72 billion, while the FactSet consensus was for a decline to $22.58 billion. Net interest income grew to $12.19 billion from $12.06 billion, above the FactSet consensus of $12.15 billion, and non-interest income slipped to $10.62 billion from $10.66 billion but topped expectations of $10.38 billion. Average loans rose 5% to $9 billion, driven by residential mortgages. Equities revenue grew 13% to $1.1 billion, helped by growth in client financing activities, while fixed income, currency and commodities revenue was flat at $2.1 billion as improvement in mortgages and municipal products was offset by weaker trading in FX and credit products. The stock has gained 2.6% over the past three months through Tuesday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.89% has slipped 1.1%.

EU tells Broadcom to stop certain business deals in unusual move - CNBC

Broadcom has been ordered to stop applying certain exclusivity deals it has with six of its customers, amid an antitrust investigation carried out by the European Union.

The Brussels-based institution believes that part of Broadcom's business could be creating "serious and irreparable harm to competition."

The European Commission opened an in-depth investigation into the U.S. company in June. As part of this investigation, the Commission announced Wednesday that it's imposing interim measures to prevent any likely "harm" to competition, for three years. Broadcom must comply with these measures within 30 days from Wednesday.

"We have strong indications that Broadcom, the world's leading supplier of chipsets used for TV set-top boxes and modems, is engaging in anti-competitive practices," Margrethe Vestager, the EU's competition chief, said in a statement.

"We cannot let this happen, or else European customers and consumers would face higher prices and less choice and innovation. We, therefore, ordered Broadcom to immediately stop its conduct," Vestager added.

Broadcom, which is a major supplier to Apple, can choose to appeal to Wednesday's decision. Khanh Lam, spokesperson for Broadcom told CNBC via email: "Broadcom's contracts with the customers that the European Commission characterizes as exclusivity-inducing remain in force, other than the provisions at issue, and we intend to continue to support these customers going forward. We do not believe that these provisions have a meaningful effect on whether the customers choose to purchase Broadcom products."

The same spokesperson added: "We intend to appeal the Commission's decision to the European Courts and in the meantime comply with the Commission's order."

Broadcom shares closed at 290.32 on Tuesday, up by about 3% on the day. The stock is about 14% higher over the last 12 months.

European Commission gets tough

Wednesday's decision marks the first time in 18 years that the European Commission has decided to implement interim measures, opening a precedent to ongoing and future competition probes.

"It is for me something special. It doesn't say that now we have all cases lined up, where interim measures will be used, but it means that the tool is on the table and if we find cases that live up to the two things that have to be fulfilled at the same time, yes we will indeed use interim measures more often," Vestager told reporters in Brussels on Wednesday.

The Nevada gaming board wants to ban casino mogul Steve Wynn - CNN

"His conduct demonstrated that he is not a person of good character, honesty, and/or integrity," the board said in a complaint filed before the Nevada Gaming Commission Monday.
"His conduct further established that he poses a threat to the public interest of the State of Nevada," the complaint says.
The board recommended the revocation, as well as a fine for Wynn after the tycoon failed to attend a scheduled hearing of the board regarding the allegations.
A representative for Wynn declined to comment to CNN Tuesday.
The state's gaming commission is tasked with deciding whether Wynn's company is still suitable for a state casino license, after a stunning report alleged former Wynn Resorts executives covered up years of sexual misconduct allegations against the billionaire.
The report, released in April by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, said the company fostered a culture of secrecy in which victims of sexual misconduct and harassment became afraid to pursue complaints or believed doing so would be pointless.
Wynn stepped down as CEO in February 2018. He has denied the accusations and engaging in any relationship that was not consensual.
Wynn's company, the gaming board complaint says, admitted to the control board it did not enforce company policies and procedures when it came to sexual misconduct allegations against Wynn, the complaint says.
As a result, the allegations were not properly addressed or investigated, the complaint says.
Wynn Resorts was fined $20 million for repeatedly failing to properly respond to the allegations

Complaint says Wynn's behavior damaged industry

In its Monday report, the gaming control board said Wynn has "repeatedly violated Nevada's gaming statutes and regulations, bringing discredit upon the State of Nevada and its gaming industry."
"He is unsuitable to be associated with a gaming enterprise or the gaming industry as whole," the complaint says.
Wynn never reported the allegations and concealed "at least some" through nondisclosure agreements, the complaint says.
The negative reporting harmed Nevada's reputation and the gaming industry, the control board claims.
"It damaged the public's confidence and trust in an industry that is vitally important to the economy of the State of Nevada and the general welfare of its inhabitants," the complaint says.

Rebound continues as home sales jump across Canada amid affordability concerns - The Globe and Mail

Canada’s home sales jumped 15.5 per cent in September compared with last year, with rising activity and record prices in Toronto and its surrounding suburbs adding to affordability concerns that have become a focus in the federal election campaign.

Sales activity grew 21 per cent in the Toronto region and 45 per cent in the Vancouver area, underpinning the year-over-year increase to 41,819 home sales nationwide, according to a report from the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA). It’s the seventh straight month that the country’s home sales have grown after hitting a six-year low in February, in part due to tougher mortgage requirements and a tax on foreign purchases of real estate in Vancouver and Toronto.

As sales activity has increased across the country, so have prices. CREA’s composite benchmark home price, an industry representation of the typical home sold, which includes detached houses, townhouses and condos, climbed slightly more than 1 per cent to $629,200 in September, compared with last year.

In the Toronto region, which includes the city and its outskirts, the benchmark home price was up 5 per cent to a record high of $806,700. In the Greater Vancouver Area, prices were down 7 per cent to $986,500, year over year, but were higher than in August, suggesting the market is rebounding from the B.C. government’s anti-speculation policies.

High housing prices became an issue early in the campaign for next Monday’s federal election, with all major parties promising to improve affordability, particularly for first-time buyers.

Nik Nanos, founder and chief data scientist of Nanos Research, said housing continues to be a major issue in the suburban Toronto and Vancouver areas.

“Housing affordability is definitely on the radar for voters, especially in those two regions which are in play, and also just have a tougher housing market,” he said.

Sales activity and prices are especially strong around Toronto, the CREA data indicate.

In the Oakville-Milton area, the composite benchmark home price rose 4 per cent to $1,026,300 last month, the real estate association said. In the Hamilton-Burlington area, home prices rose 7 per cent to $620,700. In the Niagara region, home prices increased 8 per cent to $423,300.

“We have a situation where those areas are becoming unaffordable,” said Benjamin Tal, deputy chief economist at CIBC. Even in Vancouver, Mr. Tal said: “The fact that prices went down [compared to 2018], doesn’t mean that it became affordable.”

Home prices in the southwestern Toronto suburbs have reached a record high. The price of a detached house in the Hamilton-Burlington region reached $656,300 last month. In Niagara, the price was nearly $450,000.

“If you have your heart set on buying a home, but you can’t afford or qualify for a mortgage financing in an area that you would most like to, you look at your second best. For that reason, people are driving further afield to places where they can qualify for financing,” CREA’s chief economist Gregory Klump said.

Investors are also fleeing to the suburbs, and that interest is contributing to housing boom outside Toronto.

“They are now moving funds into the St. Catharines and Niagara market,” said Brian Hogben, a mortgage broker who serves the Hamilton area. “The upswing potential is still quite large.”

The federal Liberals have proposed expanding a first-time home buyer plan to make it easier for people to buy in the expensive cities of Victoria, Vancouver and Toronto. Currently, Ottawa provides an interest-free loan of up to 10 per cent of the down payment, with a cap on the price.

The Conservatives and the New Democratic Party are proposing to extend the possible amortization period for an insured mortgage to 30 years from 25.

The Conservatives have also proposed to change the test that requires borrowers to prove they could handle home loan payments at a higher rate. It is unclear how they would change the test, which reduced the size of mortgages buyers could get.

Some critics have warned that measures to improve affordability such as lengthening the amortization period could push home prices higher and exacerbate the crisis.

“Lowering monthly mortgage payments by stretching repayment over a longer time period looks great on the surface, yet a surge in new buyers could cause prices to escalate, erasing the enhanced purchasing power,” Phil Soper, president of realtor Royal LePage, said in a recent press release.

In addition to Toronto and Vancouver, sales transactions were up in Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa and Montreal.

Air Canada is dropping "ladies and gentlemen" from its on-flight greetings | News - Daily Hive

Passengers on Air Canada flights will soon be welcomed with a new gender-neutral greeting as staff will be addressing customers as ‘everyone’ in an effort to be more inclusive.

After decades of Air Canada employees referring to passengers as “ladies and gentlemen” in their announcements, staff will now use gender-neutral greetings, according to French media outlet La Presse.

The changes were announced over the weekend in a company memo obtained by La Presse.

“We want to ensure an inclusive space for everyone, including those who identify with gender X,” reads the memo.

“The change will be reflected in the transmission of the Onboard Announcement Manual as part of our commitment to respect gender identity, diversity and inclusion. We will tell you when this transmission will be available and when to implement this change,” reads the rest of the memo, as quoted by La Presse.

Daily Hive reached out to Air Canada to comment on when the new policy will be implemented but had not heard back at the time of publication.

The change comes just over four months since the federal government announced Canadians could mark their gender as ‘X’ rather than male or female on their passport, travel document, citizenship certificate, or permanent resident card.

The policy change has since received mixed reviews from Canadians on social media, with some saying the change is unnecessary.

However, it looks like many Twitter users are on board with the changes saying that inclusion matters.

Warren Buffett’s firm is building an Alberta wind farm that can power almost 80,000 homes - Financial Post

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Energy Canada is breaking ground on a wind farm in southeast Alberta in 2020 it says will produce enough energy to supply 79,000 homes.

The $200-million Rattlesnake Ridge Wind project will be located southwest of Medicine Hat.

“BHE Canada is excited to take this first step into the Alberta market, providing low-cost, renewable energy,” said William Christensen, vice president corporate development of BHE Canada. “We’re looking forward to more opportunities to invest in Alberta’s energy industry.”

Privately financed by BHE Canada through a combination of equity and debt, the project will be built by Renewable Energy Systems (RES), which is currently constructing two other Alberta wind projects totalling 134.6 MW.

Rattlesnake Ridge Wind is expected to begin generating energy for Alberta’s grid in December, 2021.  Once complete, its 28 wind turbines are expected to provide approximately 475 GWh a year.

A large Canadian corporate partner has signed a long-term power purchase agreement for the majority of the energy output, BHE Canada said in a statement.

BHE Canada and RES have also permitted the Forty Mile Wind Farm in the County of 40 Mile in southeastern Alberta and are looking for partners in long-term power purchase agreements. This project will have a generation capacity of 398.5 MW, potentially making it the largest wind power project in Canada.

How do you destroy $77M worth of pot? Well, you don't put it in a pile 'and spark it up' - National Post

After running afoul of Health Canada this summer, Ontario cannabis producer CannTrust is now planning to destroy $77 million of its inventory and assets.

The question, unanswered in the company’s Monday announcement, is: How do you destroy that much cannabis? Though the total is still unclear, it appears to be thousands and thousands of kilograms.

Health Canada provided some guidance for the National Post on Tuesday.

One acceptable method involves shredding the cannabis and mixing it with water and cat litter — or “other types of inorganic material” — to help break it down and mask the odour before composting or disposing it. The product also can be incinerated, granted the process follows regulations that forbid any method that should result in individuals breathing in the smoke or vapour.

The point is to render the product unusable and unsalvageable, said Trina Fraser, a cannabis lawyer who specializes in regulatory compliance.
“They’re not going to put it in a big pile outside the building and spark it up — that’s for sure,” she said.

In the early 2000s, as a rookie officer with the Ontario Provincial Police, Carolle Dionne was occasionally tasked with bringing bags of seized cannabis to the lumber mill in Mattawa, Ont. — a small town outside North Bay — where it was incinerated.

“We’d do that in the middle of the night sometimes,” said Dionne, now a staff sergeant with the OPP’s communications department.

The OPP still maintains a network of third-party facilities with incinerators that adhere to local environmental regulations to burn seized drugs, the force said Tuesday. Live cannabis plants can be incinerated, but are also buried in landfills. The OPP did not have readily available statistics on Tuesday about the amount of drugs it burns.

In the cannabis industry, destruction and disposal is routine: crops are trimmed, others are defective in some way, buds fall on the floor, products are pulled out by quality assurance screening — and none of it can just be tossed in a garbage bin.

Health Canada requires all waste to be weighed and documented by two witnesses. In the case of CannTrust, the ministry will send its own witness, Health Canada said on Tuesday.

Master of Destruction

CannTrust’s licence was partially suspended last month after Health Canada found the company was growing cannabis in unlicensed areas of its facility in Pelham, Ont. The company said it wouldn’t give full details on the amount of product destroyed until it’s actually destroyed but clarified that the $77 million includes $65 million in inventory and $12 million in “biological assets.” CannTrust said Tuesday the total destruction will also include unlicenced products returned by customers.

“The destruction of the impacted inventory is both an essential and integral part of CannTrust executing its remediation plan, as well as addressing Health Canada’s remediation expectations,” the company said in its Monday statement.

The product could be easier to destroy than it sounds, according to former employee Nick Lalonde — the man who says his tip to Health Canada led to the audit this summer. Before he quit in May, Lalonde was responsible for destruction. In fact, he says his title, toward the beginning of his two years at CannTrust’s Pelham plant, was Master of Destruction. (It was later changed to Destruction and Disposal Specialist, he said.)

He said his job was to pick up all the waste and product returns, take them outside, lay them in a big patch and drive over them with a mulcher. At the beginning of his career with CannTrust, in 2017, he said the company mixed the shredded cannabis with kitty litter and water before sending it to a landfill. Later, he said, they switched from kitty litter to crushed stone.

“Myself I could destroy 800 to 1,000 plants in two hours,” he said.

But it depends on what you have to destroy.

“One time I did … receive approximately 40,000 pre-roll joints,” he said.

Each had to be taken out of the package by hand and destroyed.

“You can imagine our thumbs were blue and purple.”

CannTrust spokeswoman Jane Shapiro said the cannabis is “being destroyed in accordance with applicable regulations.”
