VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Over 200 workers at the Hotel Georgia have walked off the job and are on the picket line as of Sunday morning.
UNITE HERE Local 40, a fighting union for hospitality workers in BC says the workers have been without a contract for eight months.
“There was negotiations with Hotel Georgia [Sunday] night, and at midnight the negotiations broke down,” Sharan Pawa of UNITE HERE Local 40 says.
“They gave their proposal, the workers were not happy with it. So the workers decided to walk out then and there.”
Hotel workers striking include, front desk agents, room attendants, chefs and other many others.
“They are not getting what they deserve, which is safety on the job, respect for the work that they do, better wages, job security and just work load protections,” Pawa said.
The strike action follows walk-outs at three other Vancouver hotels, Hyatt Regency, Westin Bayshore and Pinnacle Harbourfront.
