Calgary-based Husky Energy Inc. is confirming it is laying off staff but won’t say how many.

The company, controlled by a Hong Kong billionaire, says the reductions are a result of steps taken to align its workforce with its capital plan and strategy.

One person from Newfoundland who is in Calgary working in oil and gas says he has been told that the layoffs are in the hundreds.

Husky has significant interests offshore Newfoundland.
